Peru Part II

From the Amazon, we traveled into the Andes and through the Sacred Valley, where mountain scenery, ancient sites, local markets, and traditional communities brought Peru’s history and culture to life. Before leaving the valley, we enjoyed an over the top elegant outdoor barbecue in a spectacular mountain setting. Then we boarded the train for the town of Machu Picchu, traveling through beautiful scenery as the landscape changed around us. The train ride was a memorable part of the journey itself, along with the town of Machu Picchu, a wonderful beginning to the experience of finally reaching Machu Picchu.

The hotels were memorable experiences in their own right.

Tambo del Inka was a beautiful retreat in the Sacred Valley, complete with llamas waiting to welcome us at the entrance. One of its highlights was the stunning spa pool, designed to flow seamlessly from indoors to outdoors, with floor to ceiling windows opening to the surrounding mountains and gardens. Along with the impressive great room and dining spaces, it felt both luxurious and completely connected to the landscape.

Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel offered a warm, comfortable stay surrounded by the dramatic mountain landscape. Then came the Belmond in Cusco Monastario & Convento, were simply over the top amazing, filled with history, elegance, and the kind of atmosphere that made staying there feel hard to leave.
